Hatching Stories

[Weyr Crest]

All stories were written by SunBlind, J'layle's scribe. ::blush:: Please excuse the fact that the first two hatching seem to be exactly the same except for the names, guess I wasn't too creative at the time. Hatchings did get more exciting as J'layle starts to put in his own running commentary.

Clutch 1

All the candidates were led in single file through a small door that opened right onto the Sands. Guests were still being delivered to their seats, but already dragons ringed the upper levels of the room. Their loud humming echoed through the halls of the Weyr. The Hatching was about to begin.

The candidates barely had time to ring the eggs when the first bronze broke free from his shell. It was like the shell just shattered without any effort on the dragonet's part. He raised his head and slowly scanned the gathered candidates. He turned his head from side to side, inspecting each one carefully. Then his eyes seemed to focus on something one of the candidates was holding. Ninor had forgotten to put down the wood carving he had just finished of a dragon. With a squeak a glee, the bronze rushed towards the surprised candidate, tripped over his wings and landed at in a heap at the boy's feet. Ninor bent down to help him up, as he did so their eyes met, "Warith!".

The other candidates didn't have much of a chance to congratulate him on his Impression, for several eggs had begun to rock and crack. Karal and Sana stood near a pair of eggs, but so intent they were on Ninor and Warith and all the other eggs, they didn't notice when both eggs broke at the same time, giving birth to two lovely greens. Both girls stumbled in surprise as the hungry hatchlings bumped them in the back of their knees. "Kalith, of course I'm alright," Sana comforted her worried green. "Oh Shanseth," said the small Karal, "You're such a large green!"

The two girls smiled as a brown managed to waddle his way over to a very happy Ravi. "Oh, I just knew I would Impress, I just knew it. And I knew it would be you Grelith." Just then V'lana excused herself for walking into Ravi, "Sorry, I wasn't paying attention, my Ceweth is still a bit unsteady on her feet." Both V'lana and Ravi smiled inwardly as they saw Preia Impress her green, Haraweth, knowing exactly how she felt.

The the first of the blues finally broke free from his shell. Blinking in the bright light, he stumbled blindly, but surely towards W'tan. ~No more boats?~ he asked. "No, Olerrath, we'll be sailing the skies."

Then there seemed to be a hush, though the dragons hummed louder than ever. Now only one egg was rocking, the queen egg. Slowly, bit by bit, minuscule pieces of shell broke off, till at last a piece of golden hide could be seen. Then a claw, and a head. At last, the golden one made her entrance, she was not to be rushed. Shaking herself free from the remaining shards, she first made certain that her wings were in order, before acknowledging the presence of the girls that surrounded her. With an imperial air, she glanced at each one, but none interested her. Then, snaking her head around she saw Ryanna. With a regal purr, she told the girl that her name was Sinoseth.

Now that the queen had hatched, the remaining eggs once again began to rock. Nusak, finding himself pushed back by the other candidates, remembered a song he had been learning that day when they had searched him. Starting to hum the tune, he was surprised to find another's voice humming along, though not very well. He turned to see a bronze dragonet which could only be described as smiling. "So Rarkoth, you like to sing?"

Terrance and Davin crowded around an egg about to hatch. Both couldn't help but try to get closer than the other. Both were certain that that was the egg they had been handling, course everything seemed to have been moved around. Padrieth probably wanted all the candidates to suffer this way. Terrance looked up at the queen whose eyes glowed red, but she seemed to be able to control herself. When he looked down, a brown dragonet lay in place of the egg. Both boys tried to get his attention, but with a growl, he pushed his way through to where Jaran stood near to eggs. Tugging on his robes the brown managed to tell Jaran his name was Chaeloth and that he was glad Jaran hadn't Impressed before. He wouldn't have wanted anyone else.

The two eggs, now unattended, hatched a pair of dragonets, their hides a light shade of blue. Terrance and Davin looked at each other and laughed and they called out their dragon's names "Drelath!" "Naveth!"

Lamad watched as candidate after candidate passed with their dragonet in tow. He looked about. It seemed like the last egg was Impressed by Kyndia. He heard her whisper her dragon's name as she passed by. Sounded like Arlath. Well, at least he could go home to his lovely mare. He was happy when he discovered that the Weyr had a stables, not all of them did, but it turned out the Weyrleader was quite partial to runners. "I can run too!" With a start Lamad turned to look into the blue eyes of the largest brown dragonet he'd ever seen. He'd be a match for most bronzes when he grows up. "Of course you can Frileth. And you will fly too."

J'layle walked up to the Weyrwoman as the last candidate left the Sands. "Your Padrieth must be proud. Her first clutch went well. And a bronze to be the first to hatch! Things bode well for the future."

Clutch 2

All the candidates were led in single file through a small door that opened right onto the Sands. Guests were still being delivered to their seats, but already dragons ringed the upper levels of the room. Their loud humming echoed through the halls of the Weyr. The Hatching was about to begin.

The candidates barely had time to encircle the eggs when the smallest egg began to rock. Then it was like the shell just shattered without any effort on the dragonet's part. She raised her white head and slowly scanned the awed candidates. She turned her head from side to side, inspecting each one carefully. Then her eyes seemed to focus upon a 23 year old girl. With a squeak a glee, the little white rushed towards the surprised candidate, tripped over her wings and landed in a heap at the girl's feet. Kenja bent down to help her up, and as she did so, their eyes met, "Maykith!".

The other candidates didn't have much of a chance to congratulate her on her Impression of a rare white, for several eggs had begun to rock and crack. Rezanna and Rhianna stood near a pair of eggs, but so intent they were on Kenja and Maykith and all the other eggs, they didn't notice when both eggs broke at the same time, giving birth to two lovely greens. Both girls stumbled in surprise as the hungry hatchlings bumped them in the back of their knees. "Chardoweth, of course I'm alright," Rezanna comforted her worried green. "Oh Astayth," said Rhianna, "You're such a large green!"

The two girls smiled as a brown managed to waddle his way over to a very happy Minairey. "Oh, I just knew I would Impress, I just knew it. And I knew it would be you Kedith." Just then Kesskenka excused herself for walking into Minairey, "Sorry, I didn't see you, and my Gwenyth is still a bit unsteady on her feet." Both Kess and Minairey smiled inwardly as Aynee Impressed her green, Aruweth, knowing exactly how she felt.

Then the first of the blues finally broke free from his shell. Blinking in the bright light, he stumbled blindly, but surely, towards Taaveti. ~Hungry!~ he said. "Here you are Darloth," replied his rider as he gave him a piece of meat.

Then there seemed to be a hush, though the dragons hummed louder than ever. Now only one egg was rocking, the queen egg. Slowly, bit by bit, minuscule pieces of shell broke off, till at last a piece of golden hide could be seen. Then a claw, and a head. At last, the golden one made her entrance; she was not to be rushed. Shaking herself free from the remaining shards, she first made certain that her wings were in order, before acknowledging the presence of the girls that surrounded her. With an imperial air, she glanced at each one, but none interested her. Then, snaking her head around she saw Naalea. With a regal purr, she told the girl that her name was Tilimeth.

Now that the queen had hatched, the remaining eggs once again began to rock. Selint, finding himself pushed back by the other candidates, remembered a song he had heard the day when the weyr had searched him. Starting to hum the tune, he was surprised to find another's voice humming along, though not very well. He turned to see a bronze dragonet which could only be described as smiling. "So Ocardoth, you like to sing?"

Tryst and Trilon were two of the few remaining candidates on the Sands, and there were only two eggs left. And it was with great joy when both a brown and a blue chose those two amongst the rest. Tryst, an ophan, now had a constant companion, his blue Galikath. Trilon's brown wouldn't stop cuddling up to his rider like a huge kitten, "It's ok Frokath, I'm not going anywhere!"

J'layle walked up to the Weyrwoman as the last candidate left the Sands. "Your Padrieth must be proud. Her second clutch went well. And a rare white in the clutch, and not only that, but to be the first to hatch! Things bode well for the future of these riders."
