Sophie Johnson, Unicorn Expert
Sophie is a unicorn expert. She dresses up her toys, stuffed animals, and even her baby brother as unicorns! But living with enchanted animals can be tricky business. And Sophie is so caught up in teaching others that she fails to notice the magic right under her nose.
This funny and fresh picture book tells the story of a unicorn hiding in plain sight and a little girl who is totally oblivious to his presence!
Sophie Johnson, Unicorn Expert, Is a Detective Genius
Sophie Johnson studied very hard to become a detective and it's a good thing she did – there has been a terrible crime!
Someone has stolen Lion's tail. Unfortunately, this means that Sophie doesn't have time to train her new (and not very good) assistant, Bella.
Sophie Johnson, Unicorn Expert, Is a Sports Superstar
The ever-oblivious Sophie Johnson returns to tackle the world of sports using her incredible athletic abilities…or so she thinks!
Sophie Johnson is a self-proclaimed expert. She knows everything about unicorns and detective work, and now she’s sure she knows everything about athletics, too. Preparing for a fun run, Sophie is so busy with her Excellent Race Plan that she doesn’t have time to listen to anyone’s advice about how to prepare—or even where to run! Can she stay on course to win gold, or will her perfect plan go sideways?

This one was kind of weird. Firstly, horrible artwork. Why is it anything published after 2000 seems to be drawn by a toddler? What happened to making beautiful, quality artwork for children? As a kid if I wanted art that looked like I drew it myself, I'd draw it myself. I wanted to be inspired to be better.
And the plot of this one was a bit weird. Sophie makes unicorns out of all her toys, pets, and even her baby brother. But in the background a real unicorn shows up but she does't notice. She's too busy teaching her unicorn creations about magic...and hunting??? What unicorn hunts with a bow and arrows? There are some cute whimsical moments, and I like the idea that magic can be more important than worrying about messes. Though what the message was I'm not sure, should she stop using her imagination to see the magic that is literally in front of her (although don't we usually want to encourage kids to use their imagination)? Stop being so self-centered that you're oblivous to the people around you? She never does wake up the presence of the unicorn, it leaves, dejected, since she won't acknowledge it's presence. On the whole I was a bit underwhelmed by this book.
April 2024
Decided to review all the unicorn books I read back in 2019 to see if new ones got added to any series, or if what seemed like a standalone became a series in the meantime. Sophie Johnson picked up two new books.
I guess Sophie didn't learn anything in the first book and is still so self-centered she doesn't notice a trio of burglars entering her house while she's eating lunch. As Bella the puppy runs around doing everything Sophie keeps saying how dumb her dog is. I'm not sure the point because Sophie never actually notices or learns anything, at least the police reward Bella with a medal! Maybe little kids might enjoy feeling superior to Sophie as they can see what's going on but Sophie misses everything? I guess that could be funny.
The other books is no different, she spends more time planning the race then training for it, and when the time comes she...well goes completely offtrack. Wonder whether the mom actually let her buy a shopping cart full of junk food or not? Or maybe Sophie inherits her obliviousness from her mother? You know...not a bad set of stories in a world where people are so absorbed with their phones they don't see what's happening right in front of them anymore. Like the fact there are now two unicorns!
